Lapis has a long 6,500 year history associated with ancient elites and as a source of coloring for paints and makeup. It is still a highly regarded precious stone and like in its past is still used for making carvings, jewelry, and cabochons. Lapis is mainly known for its massive form, but it can occur as rare crystals of blue Lazurite, which is one of three components that make of Lapis Lazuli, the other two include calcite and pyrite.
